Where's the money?

TARP: The one word that's as waterproof as Tarpaulin.
If there's one thing that Banks in US have learned quickly: Get the money from the tax payer and disappear!
For instance read these Gems:
  1. "We've not given any accounting of, Here's how we're doing it," said Thomas Kelly, a spokesman for JPMorgan Chase, which received $25 billion in emergency bailout money. "We have not disclosed that to the public. We're declining to."
  2. "We manage our capital in its aggregate," said Regions Financial Corp. spokesman Tim Deighton, who said the Birmingham, Ala.-based company is not tracking how it is spending the $3.5 billion it received as part of the financial bailout.
  3. "We're not providing dollar-in, dollar-out tracking," said Barry Koling, a spokesman for Atlanta, Ga.-based SunTrust Banks Inc., which got $3.5 billion in taxpayer dollars.
Hmmm... so in effect the borrowers say to the Lender that they will not disclose how the money is being spent, was spent or will be spent: in essense: Get Lost.
Imagine if the positions were reversed:
If you or I go to the Bank to borrow (as a small firm) they ask your entire financial history as individual and as a LLC, your business, your balance sheets for past decade or more, your directors' personal financial histories (even though that has no bearing on a LLC which is supposed to be legally separate from its directors), and more.
In short, they force you to lay bare your complete dossier from your current order book and future order book, salaries, etc., before lending you $100.
And they also Foreclose for 30 cents due without hesitation.
But GOD forbid if you ask the same about the Bank who seized your money without your consent, because a ex-Goldman Sachs Director thought it was necessary.

In a lawsuit-crazy nation, am surprised no tax payer has sued the Banks as borrowers and asked the court to foreclose on their properties for not repaying them.

Bankers and Car Makers: The Bailout Question

Congress took less than 72 hours to guarantee $306 Billion to Citi Group's liabilities so that Citi doesn't goto sleep.
This comes in addition to the already guaranteed $750 Billion given to Paulson as a blank check to prevent a "armageddon", and to "prevent troops deployed in streets".
Well of course, The Decider, supported him wholeheartedly since it involved bailing out his favorite friends: The Rich.
Of Course, US Newspapers have listed out the blunders Paulson did in bailing out banks and AIG...
But the topic on hand is the Auto Makers Bailout. Seeing their non-friends in Banking getting rescued by a Government running with money in their hands and forcibly stuffing the same into the banker's mouths, even when they refuse to take the money and tell Paulson where to stuff it, GM, Ford and a sceptical Chyrsler jetted into Washington in style on their private jets and begged Congress in their $10,000 Armani suits for bailouts and threaten job losses if not bailed out.
Congress wanted to know two things:
1) Would the car maker CEOs settle for $1 pay as a condition for bailiout: to which GM's CEO Mullally replied: "Iam good where am." Meaning he refused to reduce his salary.
2) Would the car makers sell their private jets right now and travel back by commercial flights: to which they refused.
Result: congress threw them out.

Now, there's the bug:
How come congres lectures Auto Makers, while it bails out AIG which goes and spends it on a HUGE party for its top executivs and does it again anonymously when found out.
Congress didn't say anything and neither did Paulson.
BUT, it wants Auto Makers to sell their shirts when they come begging for 1/10 of the money donated to banks.

Two factors are necessary here to consider a bailout:
Banks like Citi were RESPONSIBLE for their current financial fiasco they are in. Their preference of short-term profits over long term growth resulted in this.
Auto makers are not responsible for the price of oil shooting up rapidly and going down just as such. Of course congress states that 1970s should have taught them a lesson. True. But then 1907, 1929, 1987 and The Trillion Dollar Hole should have taught the Banks lots of lessons.

But congress does not criticize Banks.
Why?
Because banks bankroll congressmen with huge campaign donations. Auto Makers don't.
Plus, ALL congressmen after retirement set up their shops with Banks. None of them goes to work for Ford or GM.

The Economics of protecting common taxpayers

India's 9/11 came to Mumbai on Nov 26th and resulted in the deaths of over 180 people including about 150 indian citizens.

Public anger boiled over the fact that:
1) No politician came forward to the spot to assist the citizens
2) All politicians were interested in self-preservation and increasing their own security by depriving protection meant for the common taxpayers.

The Indian Finance Minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram is now in charge of the Home Affairs Ministry after the previous one was forcibly booted out fo refusing to take responsibility for this attack.

Mr.Chidambaram has been an astonishing finance minister india had so far. He has single-handedly concentrated on increasing the income of the state even at the cost of increasing inflation. His drastic policies in collecting taxes and surcharges has surpassed every minister so far to the point where real incomes of the salaried class fell by 14% last year.
In addition he has been 100% tight-fisted in expenditure by any reduction of taxes or prices.
For instance the recent fall in Petroleum prices by more than 55% did not result in reduction of petrol prices in India. Because a reduction in prices will mean a reduction in the excise duty collection on the face value of the administered prices.
His policy may have resulted in giving the Government a huge increase in income thus enabling it to spend more on "absolutely necessary" programs like more roads to nowhere or repainting the parliment house or buying 100 armoured mercedes cars for politicians.

As Finance Minister, Mr.Chidambaram knows that he spends over Rs.1800 millions in protecting about 250 politicians who are considered "vital" to the country. This includes some colorful characters and not so colorful ones whose continued existence is somehow justified by the government as necessary to the continued existence of the Indian Union.
Mr.Chidambaram also knows that the income and wealth taxes paid by these 250 VIP politicians amount to a total of Rs.670 million in 2007.So the net outflow from the government is Rs.1130 million which is an expense as far as the FM is concerned.

Now let us see in cold calculation whether it makes sense to protect the salaried, common, non-VIP tax payers with that money or does it pay to continue to protect these politicians.

Out of the 180 poor dead souls, 150 were indian tax payers. Some were rich (like the CEO), some better and some salaried class who pay little or no taxes.
Now let us see how much they contribute to the FM's kitty:India has some of the highest tax rates in the world at 33.5% average tax.
The mean average salaried tax payer pays Rs.19521 a year as income tax.(Salaried tax payers stand at 31.5 million while income tax collection stood at Rs.614930 million last year).
Now, 150 dead people x Rs.19521 (average) comes to Rs.2,928,150 a year in total income tax collection.

Since the government failed to protect these 130 tax payers lives, The FM stands to lose Rs.2.537 million a year in tax from these dead people.
Considering their average age was about 33, and their retirement age being 60 in india, they still have 27 years to pay taxes.
Which means 150 people x Rs.19521 x 27 years = Rs.79,060,050 in total over a period of their tax paying lifetime at current salaries.
But of course salaries increase every year. In india it increased at an average of 13.7% according to economic times.
Which means their tax payouts increase also increase by same amount.

Now, if we consider the average increase in tax payouts every year we go from Rs.19521 per year per dead soul in 2008 to Rs.483,630.50 in 2032 (The year he/she would have retired). Over the period of 27 years, he/she would end up paying Rs.580,693,658.37 as taxes in total. (Rs.580.7 Million)

Now, we saw earlier that protecting VIP politicians costs the FM Rs.1130 Million PER year and this increases by the increase in salary percentage of 13.7% (Guards are salaried).
So again the total cost to the FM is Rs.31,237,720,089.93 (Rs.31 Billion).

Tell me, Mr.Finance Minister, which is more preferable? Earning Rs.580.7 Million over 27 years or losing Rs.31 Billion over 27 years

Solving the Subprime Mess

Slate has an excellent opinion on how to solve the subprime mess: Sue the hell out of the subprime lenders.

No, its not that difficult.

Bank of America settled a suit quietly for $8 Billion dollars for predatory lending. That means the lending was illegal.

So what to do? Sue each such lender and get the loans declared illegal. Let the predatory lenders foot the bill instead of the stupid taxpayers.

Once Countrywide, Citi and BofA realize they need to forgo bonuses and commissions, plus face the wrath of shareholders for losses, they will curb any such tendencies in the future PLUS bear all the losses so far. What do you say?

This crisis is not 1929

The comparison between today & 1929 is strong. Anywhere you go you read "uncanny" similarities between 1929 and today's Gold prices (see the chart on right).
The now-defunct Merrill Lynch's CEO states that today's economic environment compares with 1929 in terms of being "catastrophic".
Nothing could be more far from truth.

Go back further: to 1873. The year of the Real Great Depression. There are some strong conclusions from how it was resolved. The panic of 1873 was the result of esoteric mortgages, land values climbed and climbed, and Europe was beseiged by the cheap grain and goods from USA.

  1. When banks fail in Wall Street, the traffic in Main street stops for a long time.
  2. British banks hold back funds because they are not sure which recepient is safe and which is not. Of course the chancellor of Exchequer has threatened to nationalise banks if they don't start lending money. Let's see how that comes to pass.
  3. Banks with largest capital reserves were able to ride the panic in 1873. The same holds good today too. The banks with largest capital today are Wells Fargo with 8.5% capital ratio and HSBC with 8.8% in clean deposits are by far the strongest on record. Of Course, Citi claims it has a 10.4% ratio with $55 Billion of deposits, but, the fact remains is that it is bringing a portion of its $1.2 Trillion failed assets chucked away off the balance sheet back into its balance sheet. Even assuming it brings only 10% of its OBS failed assets into its balance sheet, that amounts to $18 Billion. Which means its capital ratio falls to 7.4% The lowest for any Retail bank which can survive.

Bernanke may have earned ridicule and Paulson may be the most hated person in Main Street for bailing out bad banks, but in hind sight their quick action may prove to be the most calming effect so far.

Because as history has shown in 1873, 1879, 1929 and 1987(SLA Debacle), when Banks fail, Main Street stops. Period.

After lobbying hard for 50 years to get the government off their backs, Citi now wants the Government to help it

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/22/business/22citi.html?_r=1 states that Citi is looking forward to the Government to bail it out since their share prices are falling and their top management stands to lose a TON money.
Am beyond amazed. For 50 years since 1933, Citi has fought against the Steagall Act for so long that they celebrated its demise with a bottle of the costliest champagne.
That act, which could have prevented them from sliding into their worst situation today was anathema to Citi which essentially is a free hand in markets.
Citi has always hated government interference whether it is to regulate their border-line legal doings or trying to control their rampage in new markets.
After all Citi was the one who duped the Govt. of Norway by making it invest in junk bonds and later settled the case.
Now, when the FREE market has found out the true value of Citi and is displaying it in its stock price, Citi has come running to the Government to "comfort" its top executives that their multi-million shares are truly worth their weight in Gold.
It wants the Government to give the same treatment to Citi that the government gave to FreddieMac.
Total buyout by Government, and let the congress and president worry about the economic mess Citi has made and die in it while Citi's executives fly off to their Caribbean island resorts.
The sad thing is Government will oblige them, how much ever voters protest, because they have been long bought over. So now Citi is collecting the profit on its investment in Congressmen, Senators and Presidents.
UPDATE on Nov 23rd Nov: As predicted, Citi has begun collecting on its long-term investment in congressmen by making congress and Paulson back Citi's bad loans with Government Tax Payer money to the tune of $306 Billion!
Wow! Call that the BEST investment Citi has ever made!
Goes to prove that it pays to have a congressman/senator on your payroll.

Who's a Liberal? Who's a Conservative?

http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2008/11/21/liberals/ raises an interesting question: Is it fashionable to be a Liberal again?
My viewpoint:
In the past eight years US has been bombarded by the likes of O'Reilly and Ann Coulter who think the Religious Right is Right for US.
To be a liberal was to be branded a traitor.
To be a patriot one has to necessarily do the following:
1) Fly the flag
2) Attend church. Not just follow any religion, but christianity only.
3) Hate anyone who follows any other religion or faith or is an atheist.
Of course, Bush helped the situation a bit by putting the formidable financial strength of US Govt. behind faith-based initiatives for education and preventing teen pregnancy.
Now liberalism is becoming fashionable again it seems: Obama's election showed the younger generation hates being called religious nuts by their peers.
Of course, O'reilly is as usual spinning it as the younger generation hates God and hence they elected Obama...(the man never tires i guess).
But What is conservatism?
Well, in actuality conservatism refers to the pre 1890s era in US when conservatives stood for the following:
1) Little or no government control over private affairs: marriage, children, money.
2) Fiscally responsible government and citizens: no budget defecits, no bailouts, no credit cards
3) Private faith: The founding fathers especially were careful in this one: faith is private and a person can have faith in any God or Gods. The government MUST not interfere with that faith or lack of the same.
Take a look at what Bush, O'Reilly, Palin or even Cheney stand for:
1) BIG Government. I mean not big, but B-I-G Brother. Cheney must be salivating at Britain for its ubiquitious cameras, etc.
2) Unfettered power to Government to interfere in ANY facet of individual's life. There is nothing private anymore. The logic is if you have nothing to hide then why bother hiding? (The same does not apply to the government it seems).
3) Budget defecits are a MUST. Fiscally responsible has been cast as fiscally poor. The year 1913 was a watershed in many ways. It allowed politicians for the first time to overcome the limitations of traditional monetary policy and actually allowed them to spend more money than they had! The Fed backed them up.
4) A citizen MUST follow any faith as long as Christ is worshipped.
5) Abortions are disallowed under any condition. Even medical or forced pregnancy.

What is a Liberal?
A liberal generally stood for the following:
1) Multi-faith or atheist
2) Sound money backed by Gold or Silver
3) The government must be fiscally irresponsible for the people to prosper.
4) The people must be fiscally responsible for them to save money.

So where do they stand as per today's definition?
1) A liberal is a coward: per O'reilly definition
2) A liberal hates government and hence is not a patriot. (Did not Franklin say the a Patriot is one who loves the country and hates the government?)
3) By saving money, he is a hoarder which is bad.
4) Hates US being victorious anywhere!

So where do you stand today? Modern Liberal or Traditional Conservative?
or Traditonal Liberal or Modern Conservative?
